WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?

Looking at how your body moves as a whole.

Osteopathy is a hands-on approach to musculoskeletal healthcare. Amy considers what you’re experiencing alongside how you move, your medical history, lifestyle and what matters to you.

Assessment and treatment are tailored to the individual and may include hands-on techniques, movement advice and exercises where appropriate.

A PERSONAL APPROACH

Treatment that starts with understanding.

Amy takes time to understand what has been happening, how it affects everyday life and what you want to get back to doing.

Assessment and treatment are adapted around you, with clear explanations and practical guidance so you understand your care and the possible next steps.

WHAT HAPPENS AT YOUR APPOINTMENT?

A clear process, focused on you.

01
Listen

Your appointment begins with time to talk about what you’ve been experiencing, your medical history and what you’d like to get back to doing.

02
Assess

Amy may ask you to perform simple movements and will carry out an appropriate physical assessment to understand how you are moving.

03
Explain

Amy will explain what she finds clearly, answer your questions and discuss whether osteopathic care is appropriate for you.

04
Treat & Plan

Where appropriate and with your consent, treatment may begin and Amy will discuss practical next steps.

WHAT TREATMENT MAY INVOLVE

Care shaped around your assessment.

Hands-on Treatment

Osteopathic treatment can include a range of hands-on techniques selected according to your assessment and individual needs.

Movement Assessment

Amy may look at how you move as part of building a clearer picture of what you’re experiencing.

Practical Advice

Advice may be provided around movement, activity and everyday factors relevant to your situation.

Exercises & Self-Management

Where appropriate, Amy may suggest exercises or strategies to support you between appointments.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few things you may want to know.

Most patients contact an osteopath directly without a GP referral. If Amy feels osteopathic care is not appropriate, she can advise you about the appropriate next step or another healthcare professional.

Your first appointment may take up to one hour so there is enough time to discuss your history, carry out an appropriate assessment and explain the options for your care.

Wear something you feel comfortable in. Amy may need to observe how you move and may ask you to adjust or remove some clothing as part of the assessment. Please let Amy know if you are uncomfortable at any point.

If Amy identifies something that needs different medical attention, she will explain this and advise you about the appropriate next step.

Yes. Osteopaths practising in the UK must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council.
